Brain injuries can cause serious damage and permanent disabilities to any sufferer. However, when an infant suffers a brain injury that causes brain damage, the results can be particularly devastating for several different reasons. If your child suffered brain damage as an infant due to someone else’s negligence, an experienced Florida personal injury lawyer can help you receive the compensation you deserve.

Types of Infant Brain Injuries

Under certain circumstances, infants may suffer brain trauma in the delivery process. Usually, such brain damage is caused by one of the following:

  • Ischemia - which is low flow of blood to an infant’s brain
  • Hypoxia - which is lack of sufficient oxygen reaching the brain
  • Anoxia - which is a complete lack of oxygen to the brain (sometimes used interchangeably with hypoxia to describe any decrease in oxygen)
  • Perinatal asphyxia - which occurs when the infant is deprived of oxygen for a long enough time to cause apparent injury, and sometimes involves a lack of blood flow as well

All of these conditions are highly dangerous and may cause permanent developmental problems and other physical, mental, or cognitive disabilities. Brain damage from birth injuries is rare and often occurs when a doctor makes a negligent mistake, such as failing to diagnose a serious risk or condition.

After birth, infants under the age of two are still at a very high risk for Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). HIE occurs when oxygen is cut off from the brain and happens for various reasons, including:

  • Choking
  • Strangulation
  • Ruptured blood vessels
  • Overdose of medication or drugs
  • Drowning
  • Cyanide poisoning
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Injury to the trachea
  • Smoke inhalation
  • Problems with general anesthesia

Infants are also at a high risk for traumatic brain injuries (TBI). Even the slightest bump on the head for a small child can cause a concussion, which is a form of minor TBI. Furthermore, TBI does not even require someone to hit their head, as it can occur anytime the brain rattles inside the skull. One familiar instance of this may be Shaken Baby Syndrome, in which a child receives severe brain damage or is killed due to abusive shaking.

TBI can cause many complications, affecting motor skills, cognitive abilities, emotional and mental capabilities, and much more. Additionally, especially with very small infants, parents may not realize that the child has suffered a concussion or TBI. Not receiving the proper treatment then puts a child at even greater risk for repeat TBI and resulting brain damage.

Negligence Can Cause Infant Brain Damage

In many instances, a child may suffer brain damage in an incident that happened due to someone else’s negligence. Some examples of negligence that cause infant brain damage may include the following:

  • Insufficient supervision or abuse at daycare
  • Dangerous or defective products that may cause choking or strangulation, or that may collapse or fall onto a child
  • Someone dropping your child or banging their head into something
  • Car, truck, or other motor vehicles accidents
  • Improperly labeled chemicals that may cause poisoning
  • Doctors failing to properly diagnose or treat a medical condition
  • Drowning accidents caused by unsafe products or conditions

These are only a few examples of negligent actions that can cause infant brain damage. If your child has suffered brain damage, you deserve to be fully and fairly compensated for your child’s medical expenses, permanent disabilities, loss of enjoyment of life, inability to work in the future, and much more.
